Gary Kirsten has identified the key issues hindering Pakistan’s performance after two close defeats at the T20 World Cup. Despite having victory within reach twice, Pakistan let it slip away.

In one instance, a Super Over dashed their hopes, while in another, they faltered while chasing a modest target. These narrow margins have left Kirsten’s team struggling, turning what could have been a successful start into a critical situation.

Narrow Margins and Missed Opportunities

“(We) let it slip at the end,” Kirsten remarked after a narrow six-run loss to India in New York. He pointed out poor decision-making when the game was within grasp. “With a run-a-ball, eight wickets in hand, we should have finished the game. At 76/2 with six or seven overs left, it’s disappointing not to cross the line from there.”

Kirsten and his staff are now analyzing these issues, aiming to rebound in their upcoming match against Canada on June 12. To progress, Pakistan must win their remaining Group A matches and correct the mistakes that have cost them dearly.

Addressing Key Issues

Kirsten acknowledged that minor lapses, like giving away unnecessary runs, have significantly impacted their performance. “We probably gave away 10 or 15 runs at the end that we shouldn’t have. Those small details can make a massive difference. We had the game for 35 of the 40 overs.”

Recently appointed as Pakistan’s limited-overs coach, Kirsten faces early challenges but remains optimistic. He has called on his players to take responsibility and improve their game. “These guys are all international players. When they’re not performing at their best, there’s pressure. Many of them have extensive T20 experience, and it’s up to them to advance their games. If you’re not improving, you’ll be found out.”

Path to Progress

For Pakistan to advance, they need India or the USA to stumble while securing victories against Canada and Ireland on June 17. Kirsten remains hopeful, urging his team to elevate their performance. “We’ve still got a chance in the tournament. We’re hopeful things can turn in our favor. We’ve got to play much better cricket.”

By focusing on these critical areas and leveraging their experience, Pakistan aims to turn their T20 World Cup campaign around and keep their hopes alive.
