Karachi Swelters Through Hottest Day of the Year

On Wednesday, Karachi experienced its hottest day of the year, with temperatures soaring to a blistering 41.5°C.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), this extreme heat came just ten days after the city first saw temperatures climb above 40°C this summer.

Back on May 19, Karachi recorded a high of 40.2°C, which was a significant 4.4°C above the typical May average of 35.8°C. This was the highest temperature recorded in the city for 2024 until yesterday’s new peak.

PMD’s data showed that yesterday’s temperature spike to 41.5°C was a full 5.7°C above the normal temperature of 35.8°C for this time of year.

Karachi’s historical record for the highest temperature stands at 48°C, which was set on May 9, 1938. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Karachi has warned that heatwave conditions are expected to persist in Karachi and the nearby districts of Thatta, Badin, and Sujawal until June 1. During this heatwave, daytime temperatures are anticipated to reach between 41-43°C in Karachi and 43-45°C in Thatta, Badin, and Sujawal.
